Torch Base | Private commission, 2026

Maple, linseed oil, laser engraving

For this project, the client wanted a solid wood base to be made for a lamp they would use at childrens' entertainment events. We agreed on key dimensions after sharing a CAD technical mockup.

The timber was purchased from SL Hardwoods, and started as a chunky board of maple measuring 3.1m x 230mm x 50mm. After machining and laminating, the profile was rough cut on a bandsaw before being turned on the lathe. The recess for the torch insert was cut using a router and template.

To engrave the torch base, I made a custom jig which allowed the 90cm spindle to rotate about its axis while keeping the top surface level. Following some testing on scrap wood, the text was etched onto the project before the entire piece was finished with multiple layers of linseed oil.

As a final touch, I sewed a cotton protective wrap to prevent scuffs when the piece is not in use.
